Pencil Portrait No1

I thought  that I should do a pencil portrait as I haven’t done one in quite a while. I think it went average. HaHa. It definitely didn’t come out as I wanted it too. There needed to be a lot more shades in there as maybe the contrast between the details and the empty areas was too much. I think I needed to draw it in a much bigger format as I didn’t get as much detail as I would have liked either. But ahhwell. It’s still quite early in the day so I have plenty of time left to do another that I am more happy with.

Art Blog: First Post in Ages

Well I haven’t made an art blog post in ages. I don’t really have any excuses why I haven’t been keeping it up with it, I suppose I have been putting my website together which has taken a fair bit of my time up. I still think there is loads left to do to my website. The shop isn’t finished as I need to put work in it for a start aha, the front page is a bit naff, the header is rubbish etc. Needs a lot of tarting up. I’ve also been trying to get a more stable job so I don’t have to worry too much about money. I’ve got an interview next week for a PGCE so I can do teaching so hopefully that comes through.

But anyway I’ve still been painting so i still have plenty of stuff to share and hopefully you’ll like it?

The first piece ill show you is this one……..

Layered Forest View
Enamel and Oil Paint on Glass
300mm x 450mm

I painted this one for the Lynn Painter Stainers competition which I was unfortunately not accepted for :( . I suppose it was a long shot entering it as it is a more traditional competition. I painted it on multiple layers of glass which were separated with a spacer. The layers of the painting were then painted on separate pieces of glass. (foreground, mid ground, background etc). You can’t see all of the details though as the scan blurred some of the background layers but I don’t think it looks too bad. I personally like this more than previous layered glass pieces I have done as for a start I used a smaller brush which always helps. I was able to get a lot more detail into it. Here’s an example of an older one………

I definitely think the newer one has more detail in it and think its a much better piece. Well I might be totally wrong anyway but I’m sure someone will tell me. I’ll move swiftly onto my next piece I’m going to show you. This believe it or not was inspired by the revelation haha that you can get a lot more detail in your work with a smaller brush. I suppose another factor in this is that I have recently been painting with some new acrylic paints which I can get a much finer line with than previously with thinned down oils.

Here’s a link to the paint I have started using. Its more of a Model paint than anything but it suits my needs.

Heres the new painting anyway before i keep blabbing on…….

Portrait
Acrylic and Oil Paint on Board
600mm x 900mm

There is a lot more detail in this painting than in the portraits I was doing last year. I think the more detail also helps the use of glazes In my work as well. Previously I think the glazes may have been drowned out by the use of more colours.

And here is an example piece of  the portraits I was doing last year. There is definitely a lot less detail, the glazes also seem far less apparent.

The final piece I’ll show you is the one I did most recently. I painted this as a test somewhat to see if I am able to paint a finalized piece in such a small size. A3 might not seem small to some artists but I have always been used to painting quite large. And I suppose painting smaller will help my to focus on the details which will in turn help me with my larger pieces. Here it is anyway…….

I can definitely see my portraits improving especially my newest piece. I will be producing a lot more work in the coming week as I need to put together a portfolio for my interview. Definitely lacking in work in some departments. Anyway I’ll stop going on now and let you go. Please let me know what you think of my newest pieces and if you think I’m going in the right direction, and if your feeling especially helpful you can tell me what you think of my website. Good or bad I’m happy to hear your thoughts. I’ll probably try to get another art blog post out tomorrow.
